Ella by Jessilyn Steward Peaslee

EllaElla by Jessilyn Stewart Peaslee
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I am a big fan of Cinderella retellings and jumped at the chance to review this one, besides isn’t that cover gorgeous? Very intriguing and has the feel of a fairytale.

I connected with Ella right away and found myself rooting for her throughout the book. She is a likable heroine who goes through a lot of growth throughout the course of the book. While I like retellings, I love when an author takes a familiar story and really makes it their own. Adding their own touches to a classic, makes for a fun read and keeps you guessing how everything is going to turn out. I’m a big fan of YA fiction, even though the target audience might be for a younger crowd (I’m young at heart!), I still find the story to be enjoyable for any age.

Overall, I thought this was a fun escape and one I’d easily recommend! I thought this was a great debut for a new author and I’ll be keeping my eye out for more books to come.

Before the Larkspur Blooms by Caroline Fyffe

Before the Larkspur Blooms (Prairie Hearts, #2)Before the Larkspur Blooms by Caroline Fyffe
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I'm embarrassed to admit how long it took me to finally read this one. The author was very kind to send me a review copy awhile back, unfortunately with all my moving around it's now safely in storage. While updating my reading list the other day I realized I never reviewed this one. So I grabbed a copy from Amazon and curled up next to the fire and dived into the charming town of Logan Meadows.

Thom Donovan has spent the past eight years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. He is finally free and looking forward to returning home and starting new. Things are not quite how he left them and he's in for a few surprises, not all of them are good. I liked Thom's character quite a bit. He has grown a lot over the past eight years. I liked that he was strong and wanted to redeem his family name, prove himself. I also liked our heroine, Hannah. Also a strong character who doesn't put up with much. I liked that she wasn't afraid to show Thom how she felt, even when he was pushing her away. I felt their friendship and felt their love for each other. I thought they were a cute couple.

There were two different stories woven into this one book. I admit, I wasn't a big fan of sharing page-time on another couple/story. Maybe if the second story had been told more from Thom/Hannah's POV somehow it wouldn't have bugged me so much. I guess I just wanted the focus to be on Thom and Hannah.

Overall, I enjoyed this one. I liked the setting of Logan Meadows and the interesting people that live there. I look forward to checking out the rest of the series!

Sarah M Eden British Isles Collection

A Timeless Romance Anthology: Sarah M. Eden British Isles CollectionA Timeless Romance Anthology: Sarah M. Eden British Isles Collection by Sarah M. Eden
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This has been nominated for a 2015 Swoony Award, you can vote for it here.

A Friend Indeed
Sweet and swoony! I really enjoyed the story of George and Caroline. They have known each other since childhood and recently became engaged. Caroline is worried he is only doing it out of friendship and obligation, and George is determined to show her his real reason for wanting to get married. George really had some swoony moments; he just seems like such a nice guy. While it is a short story, it takes place over a few weeks and felt well developed and I was satisfied with the pace and how things wrapped up. Great read.

A Happy Beginning
Loved it! This was a great story with great characters. I probably will sound like a broken record when I review each story and end up saying the same thing, “I really enjoyed it!” Sophia works as a governess for a horrible family in Scotland. She feels alone since her position limits her interactions with the rest of the staff and family. She has grown fond of the head groom, Dermot, who is quiet and confident. This was just another nice escape, well written and engaging. Had all the great elements of a full-length novel wrapped up in a short story. Highly enjoyable.

Road to Cavan Town
I loved this! I was immediately drawn into this charming story. Alice is just lovely, just a really good person and easy to like. She is so patient and understanding of Issac, even though he has his mind set on courting another woman. Isaac was also likable, I was glad we got to hear his POV as well, it was fun to watch his eyes open and see what really mattered in his life. It really is a sweet story and even though it was short, it was full of fun characters, lovely romantic tension and a charming Irish town.

A Christmas Promise
This is such a charming story. I loved everything about it, the setting and characters and humor. Sean and Maeve have a sweet courtship, I loved her overprotective brothers and of course Rufus! Just a charming story.

Dream of a Glorious Season
Beth and Julian have been friends since childhood, she’s had a crush on him for as long as she can remember, he still views her as a friend. He also happens to be “betrothed” to her older sister, or at least there is an expectation that they will make a match of it. Beth’s family does not treat her very well, but Julian is always there for her. I thought they had a great story, I liked seeing Julian realize his feelings run deeper than friendship. I also loved how he always stood up for her. Another fun story!

A Lesson in Love,
I originally read this when it was part of the European collection. It had been awhile though so it was fun to read it again. Lucy and Reed are a sweet, newlywed couple. You can tell they are in love from the beginning of the story, they just have different ideas of what their social life would be like once they’re married. Reed is excited to spend time at home, not having to attend the Season. Lucy on the other hand, is excited to finally have a husband to enjoy all the Season has to offer. Their well-meaning, but meddlesome family decides to “help” the couple out, but only end up causing more problems. This was a cute read, I like reading about couples that are already married, and it was fun to see them figure things out. Sweet read.

I adored this collection of stories, Ms. Eden is an expert storyteller. She always pulls me into her stories, makes me fall in love with the characters and makes you want to step back in time. I love how each story is unique, good plots and characters you can’t help but root for. Swoony romance and just a fun escape. Highly recommend to fans of historical fiction.

The Book of Ivy by Amy Engel

The Book of Ivy (The Book of Ivy, #1)The Book of Ivy by Amy Engel
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4.5

I saw a friends review on the second book the other day that peaked my interest. For some reason this series had slipped past me, I don't remember hearing about it before. When I read the synopsis for the first book I knew I had to give it a try. After getting sucked in with the sample I had to keep reading to see what would happen next.

This takes place in the not too distant future after war and disease have wiped out most of the population. Two groups come together and fight over what is now known as Westfall. Ivy's family was on the loosing side, and are not happy about it. To keep the peace and try and increase the population, they have arranged marriages. Ivy is destined to marry the presidents son, Bishop. Her family wants to regain power and their plan includes having Ivy going through with the marriage so that she can kill him.

I think I was expecting a little more action, but its really a story about Ivy and Bishop. There wasn't a ton of world building and I did have a lot of questions, but I also really enjoyed the relationship so I wasn't too upset that there wasn't more going on. There were even a few surprises, which is always nice.

Ivy is a likable character, easy to relate to and root for. I loved Bishop. The strong, silent type. He's great with Ivy, patient and kind. I loved that it wasn't an insta-love story, we actually get to see them build a friendship, learn to trust each other. Their relationship evolution was very believable.

The book kinda ends on a cliff-hanger, but I was kind of expecting it would end a certain way and knowing the second book is already out made it not so bad. I can just pick up right where I left off. The book does have some serious moments (view spoiler)

Overall, I really enjoyed it and would recommend to any Dystopian fan, more focus on the romance than a government overthrow, but that's just fine for me. ;)

Content
Romance: Clean, somewhat steamy make-out scenes, no real details
Language: Mild-Moderate, a few mild ones sprinkled throughout

Married 'til Monday by Denise Hunter

Married 'til Monday (Chapel Springs, #4)Married 'til Monday by Denise Hunter

I just have to say, I love the cover!

I always enjoy Ms. Hunter's books and I've been looking forward to reading this one. I've enjoyed this whole series and was curious to finally get some answers about Ryan and Abby.

Ryan and Abby were college sweethearts, but their happily ever after came to an end only a year (or so) into their marriage when Abby leaves Ryan. The story picks up three years later when Ryan finds would Abby never told her parents about their divorce. When he's invited to his in-laws anniversary party he sees it as a second chance with Abby.

While I did enjoy this story, it deals with some sad childhood trauma and it did give the book a heavy feel, at least for me. Abby has a lot of issues to work through, I was kind of hoping it would have been something she dealt with the three years they were separated, it seemed a little late in the book when she finally realizes how her upbringing has effected her relationship with Ryan. I liked Abby okay, but I definitely wanted to jump in there and shake some sense into her a few times. Ryan was great, he was patient and so in love with Abby. Again, I would have liked to see them together when Abby was in a more healthy place and I would have loved for her to confront her dad.

Overall, I did enjoy this one. It was well written and sucked me in. I read it in one sitting.

Getting Kole for Christmas by Kimberly Krey

Getting Kole for Christmas: A Young Adult NovellaGetting Kole for Christmas: A Young Adult Novella by Kimberly Krey
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

So Stinkin' Cute!!

This was such a fun novella. Kylie is a junior in high school and never been asked to a school dance. She's had to sit by as her older twin sisters get asked to every dance, and now it looks like her younger sister is going to the Christmas dance and she'll be left out once again. Her dream date is her good friend, Kole. This was just a fun story, I enjoyed every minute. Ms. Krey transitions to the Teen Lit genre effortlessly, as much as I adore her adult contemporaries, I hope she writes more YA as well. Keep us on our toes! ;)

Mending Hearts by Kimberly Krey

Mending Hearts (Second Chances, #2)Mending Hearts by Kimberly Krey
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Another hit!

I'm never disappointed when I pick up a Kimberly Krey book. She has definitely been added to me go-to author list.

Candice and Logan have been married for ten years, after suffering through a lot of trials they've decided to separate. To be honest, I was a little upset with Candice at first, but I grew to like her as the book progressed and having experienced some of the things she went through, I could understand why she put up the walls she did. Logan was great! He is deeply in love with Candice and will do whatever it takes to win her back. They really do have a sweet relationship, I liked that it took time to build things back up and that they had to do some self discovery and didn't rush things.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read, didn't want to put it down. It's the second book in the series, but stands well on it's own. Another thing I love about Krey's books, the characters overlap a bit, but each book stands really well on its own. I am really looking forward to the next book!

Stealing Adda by Tamara Leigh
WRITER’S BLOCK, NIBBLED NAILS, PLAGIARISM, OH MY! AND DID I MENTION ROMANCE? Life for Adda Sinclaire, New York Times best-selling author and historical romance writer extraordinaire, reads more like a country song than a breathless, bodice-bursting affair. For starters, she has no romance in her own life. That might have something to do with the fact that her husband—correction, ex-husband—ran off with Stick Woman, whom everyone knew would never be more than a mid-list author anyway. To add insult to injury (and another verse to the country song), her ex not only took their dog but gave it to Stick Woman. If that isn't enough, Adda has come down with a horrible case of writer's block, finds herself gifted with a Bible that is determined to speak to her, and is the unwitting target of a romance cover model's misdirected advances. Just when she catches her breath—and quite possibly the eye of a certain fabulously good-looking man (ahem…her new editor)—her arch-nemesis gives the pot one final stir.

Dating definitely isn’t in his plans . . . until beautiful and enigmatic Talia throws a perfect storm right in his flight path. When he catches a glimpse of the real woman behind her façade, he has to get to know her better.
Talia has to find a Russian spymaster before he figures out she’s not who she claims, and failing to keep her two lives separate in the process could mean the death of more than just her budding relationship. Danny has to decide if a future with Talia — and facing the past — is worth the risk of getting hurt again. If they can break through the barriers keeping them apart (and avoid a major international catastrophe), they just might have a chance at being happy together.
