A Convenient Christmas Wedding by Regina Scott
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the fifth book in the Frontier Bachelor series, but stands very well on its own. I haven’t read the other books yet (planning to), but jumped to this one since I’m reading Christmas books right now.

I thought this was a sweet story. I really liked Nora, I thought she was an interesting character. I love how she turns Simon’s life upside down. He can be a bit of a fuddy-duddy, but she brings out a better side to him. I’m always a sucker for a good marriage of convenience story and thought it was well done here. There are some really sweet moments and fun interactions between the characters. I liked the Christmas elements, and cozy setting. Overall, a fun read!

Content: Clean, mild kissing, no language or violence. Moderate religious elements.

Happy Valentine's Day!

I have always loved Valentine's Day, even the many times I was single, I still think its a great holiday. I like the idea of having a day where you let the people you love know how much they mean to you. Since the holiday really revolves around couples, I thought I'd write up a quick post with a few of my favorite book couples. As you may already have noticed, I love reading romance. I love seeing people fall in love, but there are always a few couples that stand out from the rest. So here are a few of my favorite book couples, chosen at random from my Favorite Couples Shelf on Goodreads.

Lark Lawrence and Slater Evans

 

These two have great chemistry! He's lived a rough life, but has a fun side underneath all his gruff. Lark is a sweetheart, always taking care of those around her. Her kindness and charm quickly endear her to Slater and he just can't help keeping her for himself.

 

Working it Out by Rachael Anderson

Grace Warren and Seth Tuttle

 

I love when our lead characters really help each other grow and bring out the best in each other. Grace and Seth have great chemistry and some fun moments together. You can't help rooting for them to end up together.

 

The Guise of a Gentleman by Donna Hatch

Elise Berkley and Jared Amesbury

 

Jared and Elise are total opposites, he's a swashbuckling pirate and she's a prim and proper English lady. There's more than what's meets the eye with these two though, and they simply can't resist each other. I loved these two! They may be opposites, but definitely work well together.

The Rejected Suitor by Teresa McCarthy

Emily Clearbrook and Jared Ashton

 

Lost love stories always add a delicious level of tension that I just can't get enough of. Emily can hold her own with alpha-male Jared. They have great chemistry and a lot of obstacles to overcome to get to their happily ever after. 

Pimpernel by Sheralyn Pratt

Claire Ramsey and Jack Cavanaugh

 

Oh boy! This is a fun adventure and Jack is quite charming! I thought they had fun chemistry and I liked that Jack just can't live without his Claire. I'm hoping that there will be more books in this series, because I want to see these characters again!

 

The Unflappable Miss Fairchild by Regina Scott

Anne Fairchild and Chas Prestwick

 

Okay, if you like a funny and lighthearted heroine giving a charming rake a run for his money, then read this book!  I really liked how there seemed to be a genuine friendship between Chas and Anne that naturally grew to love. This also happens to be one of my favorite regencies!

It was really hard to narrow it down to just these few and in making this list it just reminded me of how much I love to read. I love meeting new characters, the trials they have to go through and the romance (of course). Reading really is the best pastime.

Five Reasons to Agree to a Marriage of Convenience by Regina Scott

I wrote more than a dozen Regency romances before I ever wrote my first marriage of convenience story. Since joining the Love Inspired Historical family, however, I find myself embracing the idea. A marriage of convenience is when two people agree to marry with no commitment of love. What makes a good marriage of convenience story is when love starts to grow, despite circumstances and protests from the bride and groom’s hearts.

I’m not sure I’d be willing to agree to marry for convenience sake, but here are five reasons a lady might consider it.

1.     Everyone else is doing it. No, it’s not a particularly good reason, but there were enough spinsters left without sweethearts, particularly after the Napoleonic Wars in Europe and the Civil War in America, that marrying someone, ANYONE, was preferable to living on your family or the community’s charity.

 2.     Pressure from your family. Remember those spinsters? Not every family was amendable to seeing to their upkeep. If a gentleman evinced interest, the lady might have considerable encouragement to accept, even if it was only a marriage of convenience.

3.     To protect your reputation. Sometimes, a lady makes a mistake. She walks in the wrong neighborhood. She trusts the wrong person. Suddenly, the world sees her as less than a lady, and other options slam shut. My heroine, Amelia Jacoby, in The Husband Campaign, faced this future when a storm forced her to spend the night in an outbuilding with a gentleman.

 4.     For security. It’s a sad fact that legal ways to make money were limited for women in the 1800s. When a father or husband dies, leaving a woman without a protector, a husband of any kind looks like a good deal. Such was the case for my heroine, Nancy Bennett, in September’s A Rancher of Convenience. A pregnant widow facing the loss of the ranch she had called home, she was willing to marry her husband’s foreman to provide a future for her child.

 5.     To escape someone you fear. Likewise, a lady might choose to enter into a marriage of convenience to avoid the clutches of someone ought to hurt her, physically, mentally, or socially. Nora Underhill, the heroine of this month’s A Convenient Christmas Wedding, has spent most of her life in drudgery—first caring for her elderly parents, then slaving away for her brother and sister-in-law. Regina Scott started writing novels in the third grade. Thankfully for literature as we know it, she didn't actually sell her first novel until she had learned a bit more about writing such as vocabulary, sentence structure, and plot. After numerous short stories and articles in magazines and trade journals, she got serious about her novel writing. The Unflappable Miss Fairchild was her first novel to be published (March 1998).

Besides her novels, Regina Scott has had published three Regency novellas ("The June Bride Conspiracy" in His Blushing Bride, "Sweeter Than Candy" in A Match for Mother, and "A Place by the Fire" in Mistletoe Kittens). Two of her novels, A Dangerous Dalliance and The Twelve Days of Christmas, have been translated into German. A Dangerous Dalliance and The Incomparable Miss Compton have been translated into Italian. Starstruck and Perfection have been translated into Dutch.

Regina Scott and her husband are the parents of two sons. They reside in the Tri-Cities of southeast Washington State and are members of the Church of the Nazarene. Born in 1959 and raised in the Seattle area, Regina Scott is a graduate of the University of Washington. She comes by her writing talent naturally--both her parents are excellent writers in their vocations as teacher and electrical technician. Her mother envisioned the plot for "Sweeter Than Candy," the novella which was written as a tribute to her. 

Regina Scott is a devout Christian and a decent fencer; owns a historical, fantasy, and science fiction costume collection that currently takes up over a third of her large closet; and has been known to impersonate an independent consultant specializing in risk communication.

Everard Legacy by Regina Scott

This was a fun new regency series, one that you would definitely want to read in order. There is an overlapping mystery throughout and you may be a little lost if read out of order. Each book also has a lovely romance that really outshines the mystery aspects. It did feel at time that the mystery was there to help bring the characters together. I read these more for the relationship than for the mystery. The first three books focus on the story of three men, two brothers and a cousin. They all at one point in their lives came to live with their uncle and are very close. They are brought together again when their uncles dies under mysterious circumstances, but also when they find out he had a daughter they never knew about. The first three books of the series focuses on uncovering the truth behind their uncles death. The last book takes place about eight years later, but has strong ties to the first three books. It is probably the only one that could really stand on its own, but would probably be better appreciated if read in order.

Overall, I thought it was a fun series. I liked each of the different romances and thought we were given some very likable characters. It was fun to see the different couples come together. I especially liked the last book, it was nice to see how close everyone was. These would fall under Christian fiction, to be honest, I kind of skipped some of the preaching stuff and all of the prayers were in italics (which were easy to skip). Not that there is anything wrong with that stuff, but I prefer to have good characters without the obvious preaching. It was pretty mild compared to some and again easy to overlook if you don’t like that stuff, but also well done if you do.

My Review: I can’t remember how I came upon this book, but I’m glad I did. It was an enjoyable story with likable characters. It reminded me a lot of a few others books (The Season, Aurelia, And Only to Deceive), and those stories kept running through my mind as I read La Petite Four. Emily and her three best friends have been planning their coming out ball for ages, and when Emily’s long-time betrothed shows up and cancels Emily’s plans she decides she needs to get out of the engagement. The four become detectives as they follow Lord Robert around trying to uncover any secret that could end Emily’s engagement. It was a fun story, with mystery and a little romance.
